Corruption
Corruption in Ashes of Creation refers to:
- Spieler Verderbnis gained through the PvP flagging system.[2]
- Corruption tarnishes the character’s spiritual essence. Their ability to utilize the Verra’s magic found within them is diminished.[3] – Steven Sharif
- Verderbte Essenz is the negative aspect of Die Essenz, spread by Die Uralten during the Apocalypse (Überlieferungen).[4][5] This form of corruption is present in Corrupted areas/zones that evolve with node progression.[6][7][8]
- Corruption is a representation of The Ancients' magic: The Ancients hatred. The Ancients desire to strike back at the creation of what their the gods who banished them to the void have tried to accomplish on Verra. And so corruption is this influence of The Essence that permeates around locations in the world and tries to pervert what that creation really is.[9] – Steven Sharif
Spieler Verderbnis
When you gain that corruption you have the potential of losing your completed items, your weapon, your armor, stuff that is very difficult to achieve; and then the other aspect of that is, that in order to deter basically players taking alternate characters and saying this is my PK alt, the more players you kill, the more corruption you gain, the higher your combat efficacy in PVP diminishes. If you're out there and you killed 20 players... you will not be able to perform in PVP any longer. You will need to take that character and go work off that corruption. The other aspect of corruption is that if you kill another player, who is a non-combatant and the level disparity between you and that player is great, you will gain a higher amount of corruption from that single kill. To the point where you should not be killing a level one character.[10] – Steven Sharif
The more corruption you gain, the less effective you become in PvP and there's going to be a certain period at which point you have gained enough corruption that you're going to be gearless and you're also going to have a massive reduction in your PvP efficacy.[21] – Steven Sharif
Reward without risk is meaningless... Corruption is just another word for risk.[22] – Steven Sharif
You can't necessarily time perfectly the damage or understand even the health of the player. Unless you were in their party you cannot see an opponent's health as well, so that's another component that adds risk..[23] – Steven Sharif
PvP-Statuseffekte
Das Open-World PvP Flagging-System in Ashes of Creation ist in drei Stufen unterteilt.[12]
It's important to note that the idea is going to be that, unless a player is in your party, alliance, guild, or raid that you will not have definitive knowledge of their exact hit point values. So when you do something that's sketchy like that, where you want to bring them close to death and let a monster finish him off, you are taking the risk of overhitting and actually gaining the corruption.[29] – Steven Sharif
If you have that check-box for flagging with your AOEs and heals available then you will flag. If you do not have that box checked then on completion of the skill it will not flag you because the check was made at the start that there was a flagged party member; and then he will not he or she will not receive the beneficial effect as a result or the damage, if it's an offensive spell.[37] – Steven Sharif
You're not going to see griefing in the game very often; and that's because our flagging system. The corruption mechanics are based around disincentivizing a griefer or PKer but still offering the opportunity, should the occasion arise, where the benefits outweigh the risk, you have the ability to do so. If you gain corruption, which is killing a non-combatant - a player who is not fighting back basically - if you gain that corruption, your world has changed. It is not going to be a very beneficial place to be and you have the potential of losing your gear. Your combat efficacy decreases based on the amount of corruption you accrue. It is a comfortable balance between player agency and grief and basically removing player agency for other players.[40] – Steven Sharif
Verderbnis entfernen
Player death
When a player dies they disintegrate into ash. The ashes contain any items lost by the player due to applicable death penalties.[45][46][47][14][48]
- PvP-Statuseffekte is not triggered by looting.[30]
- It might even be the case that their particular bag space doesn't have available location for a three-by-one log; and you're a lumberjack and they see you just chopping down these trees and you're like, there's no point in me engaging with this person, because I have nothing to gain due to my capacity.[51] – Steven Sharif
- There will be a period of time following a player's death before their mule despawns. Other players must kill that player's mule to be able to loot it.[52]
- If the mule dies its corpse will contain the same percentage of lootable items according to the player's death penalties.[52][53]
- Players do not lose gold upon death, no matter their corruption level.[54]
- Glint looted from a dead character by any other player, regardless of affiliation, becomes stolen glint. Character's who loot their own bodies will recover their glint in its non-stolen state.[55][56][46]
Bestrafungen für den Tod
- Non-combatant (green players) suffer normal death penalties, which include:[14]
- Experience debt (negative experience).[61] Experience debt scales to approximately 2 or 3 percent of the total XP for a max level player. These numbers are subject to change based on testing.[62]
- Skill and stat dampening, such as Lower health and mana.[63][64][65][10][21]
- Reduction in loot drop rates from mobs.[66]
- Durability loss.[67][68][14]
- When players die and they take durability loss, our durability loss isn't like other games where it's a gold sink so to speak. It's a combination of both a gold sink and a material sink. So in a sense, even if you only have completed items, when you take that durability loss you are losing out on materials. It's just a debt to the materials that you are losing instead of the active loss of that material in your inventory. So now you are accruing a material debt if you want to repair and increase again the performance of those particular items that take that durability loss.[67] – Steven Sharif
- Dropping a percentage of carried gatherables and materials that are used in the generation of something else.[69][47][14]
- Items made for final consumption are not dropped, such as consumable items created by the Kochen and Alchemy professions.[69]
- A percentage of the glint a player is carrying are also dropped.[48]
- Combatants (purple players) suffer death penalties at half the rate of non-combatants.[14]
- Corrupt players (red players) suffer death penalties at four times the rate of non-combatants.[64][11]
- Corrupt players also have a chance to drop any equipped items based on their current corruption score, including dropping weapons and armor.[11][16][64][11][70][14]
- Any amount of corruption allows a player to drop equipped gear upon death. The higher the corruption the greater the chances.[71] – Steven Sharif
- Corrupt players respawn at random locations in the vicinity of their death, not at regular spawn points.[72] Non-corrupt players always respawn at the closest active respawn point (to their death).[73]
- Corruption penalties occur as the corruption is gained (not just at death).[13]
- Death penalties for corrupt players apply in every location, including naval PvP zones.[74]
Death penalties (mostly) do not apply to objective-based PvP (also called sanctioned events).[75][76][77][78]
- There will not be death penalties applied to event-based deaths. The penalties are in the outcome of the event. So your number of deaths is likely going to impact your ability to win that particular event and that's going to be the penalty. This is it to encourage players to opt in to the events right because the more participation we have the more fun it can be; and we understand that the community at large- there's already a risk versus reward component to these events. We don't need to stack on additional risk versus reward to inhibit kind of- to increase the barrier to entry for players who may not be as interested.[78] – Steven Sharif
- Gear degradation applies on death during Karawanen-PvP.[76][77]
- Previously it was stated that death penalties do not differ between PvP and PvE.[79]
Non-corrupt players suffer reduced death penalties in naval PvP (open seas) zones.[74]
- These penalties will be less than those for a green player.[80]
- Reduction in gear proficiency.[14]
Kopfgeldjäger-Karten

Corrupted areas/zones
Corrupted areas (zones/points of interest) can dynamically evolve with the progression of nodes and story arcs.[101][6][91][93][92][102][8]
- Vorboten that exist on Verra as dungeons are where Die Uralten are capable of pushing into the material plane. They can continue to do so under the guise of the effects of corruption as it spreads.[90]
- These are sources of NPC events that players need to address before they grow out of hand.[101][103][102]
- Players need to participate in these events to stop the spread of corruption and hold back the intrusion on the material plane.[101][90]
- If players fail to address these corrupted areas, the frequency of NPC events against their node will increase. These can lead to node buildings and services being disabled, increasing the node's vulnerability to node sieges.[104]
- It can be a very detrimental thing if corruption is not addressed; and that's the intent of corruption, is to present a challenge to the players that if not addressed it becomes exacerbated and a problem over time.[104] – Steven Sharif
- Corrupted areas do not confer corruption onto a player. Only PvP related activities lead to player corruption (in the flagging system).[9][95]
- To degree your mortal coil, as we call it, or what some might consider a soul from your character's perspective within this story- can be influenced and can be changed into a shape that's more in tune with corruption; and that's through doing PvP things you can accomplish that.[9] – Steven Sharif
- When it enters the corruption state outside of weather, in that corrupt state, you will probably see a little bit less of the influence of the season because really it's adopting that corruption, which in-and-of-itself is a season.[105] – Steven Sharif
- Corrupted areas will spawn variations of mobs and resources.[101]
- Corrupted resources are only available in corrupted areas or during certain story arcs.[101][6][96][97][98]
Blood magic
Blood magic is a school of magic that creates a certain amount of corruption in the caster. This corruption can bleed over into the environment and other things that the caster draw Essence from in order to cast these spells.[107][108]
- The curse of Carphin was born from blood magic.[109] This began with the blood sacrifice of Veric Pulsifer by Laria Lemonte, which started a ritual that led to the mass killing of the residents of Carphin, turning them undead.[110]
- The ability to wield blood magic might be considered "illegal" by certain lawful citizens and nations of Verra. There may be ramifications when players discover and experience blood magic in the world.[107]
- When we say that blood magic is "illegal", we're talking about in the context of a normal everyday player who's a citizen of Verra having come from Sanctus. You are adhering to the local laws and guidance from nation governments and/or node governments to be a good upstanding citizen of Verra. You adhere to these laws. The ability to wield blood magic might be seen in some storylines we'll see. That is left to the players to experience and discover. Those types of choices might have ramifications on your character and or ramifications within story lines... Whether players will be able to wield blood magic is up to the different story lines you all explore.[107] – Steven Sharif
- The developers adhere to a style guide for blood magic, along with other schools of magic.[107]
- When we talk about how do we create a blood corruption setting, well what is the associated colors, what's the shape language of blood magic. This flowing river- you saw some of them in the VFX of the zone and Carphin- you saw the mist in the deep red saturation. Each of the environments and the magics and what we create has an associated style guide that includes color wheels and palettes across different influences.[107] – Steven Sharif
