Mounts are obtained through an early quest that is available to players in starting areas.[2]

We kind of want mounts to be ubiquitous for people.[13]Peter Pilone

There are going to be classes of mounts; and you will be able to achieve skins in the game or you will be able to achieve different types of those classes and summon them.[10]Steven Sharif

Mount abilities and stats

Noble Warhorn Sprint mount ability.[14]

All mounts will have certain types of abilities: Whether those abilities are utility, or sprint, or some type of combat charge through that knocks down players or something. It just depends on the type of mount and the skills associated with that mount. That's also one component of the animal husbandry system is in creating these mounts you can have unique skill sets associated with them that obviously creates an economy for mount types and and puts some relevancy on the profession of animal husbandry to present unique mounts.[15]Steven Sharif

Mounts have different core abilities, utility skills and stats.[15][16]

  • Based on skill choice, mounts can be used as initiation vehicles, escape vehicles, utility vehicles, and traversal vehicles.[17]

Mounts have obviously many different applications and that's also going to speak to its identity when it has a skill selection choice too. Like do you- are you more aggressive in initiation with your mount? Okay well you probably want the ones that are going to be able to charge through and do some type of CC effect on players in front of you. Are you more about kind of using them out to dodge and avoid you know different types of things? Well then you probably want some type of invulnerability skills or some type of protective skills that you can activate at certain times. Are you going to be more traversal and focus on kind of speed you use your mount just kind of go around the world and you don't really care about the combat aspect? Well then you probably want some skill sets on your mount that reflect that.[17]Steven Sharif

  • Mounts will have varied speeds.[19]

There's definitely a difficulty from a balance perspective obviously on the design side when you're having to incorporate speeds that are so radically different from the normal player movement speeds; and mounts do have a obviously a significantly faster component there. But that's why you build into the to the skill sets that players have obviously those types of cc's which can either, as we spoke about previously, knock the player off of their mount, kill them with some massive damage, or stun the player. Those are components that are taken into account when balancing out these skill selections.[17]Steven Sharif

  • A player can dismount and have their mount follow them.[15][20]

Mounted combat

Certain mounts will have combat abilities.[21][12]

  • Players can't use their class skills while mounted.[21]
  • Mounts can be targeted separately from the player while mounted.[20]
  • Mounts can be killed by players, but can be resurrected after a certain cooldown period.[20][22]

Dragon abilities

Dragons are epic flying mounts with strong battle abilities, such as AoE breath attacks, swooping flyby attacks, and others.[23][10]

The dragon will have a lot of capability in PvP. It's primarily its purpose, because as it relates to Castles and the sieges they're in, or Nodes and the sieges they're in. We want dragons to have large scale ramifications against player raids.[10]Steven Sharif

Summoning mounts

Summoning a mount in Alpha-1.[24]

We want to make sure that it's not cumbersome to quickly mount a steed and start moving... Steeds play a very important role in mobility.[24]Steven Sharif

Mounts are items that players carry then activate to summon the mount nearby.[12]

  • Mounts are generally able to be summoned during combat in the open-world.[17]
    • There may be exceptions to this in certain dungeons, instances or other spaces where summoning mounts may not be permitted.[17]

A mount can be an initiation vehicle; it can be an escape vehicle; it can be utility vehicle; it can be traversal.[17]Steven Sharif

Mounts are going to be items that you will be able to carry on your character and activate to summon the mount in front of you or near you; where you can then ride the mount.[12]Steven Sharif

  • A player can dismount and have their mount follow them.[15][26]
    • Some crowd-control abilities can dismount a mounted player. In that case the mount would persist with its own health pool and other stats.[15]
    • In current Alpha-1 testing mounts are not separate from the player, but in future mounts will be able to

Right now we don't have it where the mount is separate from the player per-se. You automatically mount the mount when you summon it in the in the alpha. But in the future you'll be able to summon it and you won't have to automatically mount it. It'll just be standing next to you. It'll follow you around and then you'll be able to mount it.[15]Steven Sharif

  • De-summoning the mount returns the item back to the player's inventory.[25]

Land mounts

Land mounts (Ground mounts) are tier 1[5] mounts that are obtained through an early quest that is available to players in starting areas.[2]

Gliding mounts

Gliding mounts are tier 2[5] winged mounts that jump/glide/hover close to the ground.[28] Unlike royal (tier 3) mounts, gliding mounts are not capable of true flight.[29]

  • Certain tier 2 mount skins can be upgraded to tier 3 skins if they also apply to royal mounts.[5]

Flying mounts (Royal mounts)

Royal mounts are a tier 3[5] class of flying mounts available to Bürgermeister of metropolis nodes and Kings and Queens of Gildenschlösser. Royal mounts can also be dropped from legendary world bosses.[30][10]

Generally flying is not something that we're going to be doing in this game and there's a lot of reasons for that: Some of it is economic, some of it is ... you create this really great looking world and we don't want you flying over all the time.[29]Jeffrey Bard

At any given point in time you're gonna see anywhere from 10 to maybe at max I would say around 20 based off of the legendary world boss timers. Probably 20 people who have flying abilities.[32]Steven Sharif

There are different types of royal mounts.[10]

Dragons are a class of these royal mounts. You can get different types of royal mounts. They don't have to be dragons. They could be some other type of legendary mythical creature... It will be an epic looking large-scale creature and people will notice you and it while you are approaching.[10]Steven Sharif

Undermounts

The guild leader of a castle can grant the use of flying undermounts (such as wyrmlings) to guild officers during a castle siege.[20][38][39][40]

  • These may only be granted if the castle nodes are successfully established prior to the siege.[40]
    • Node A grants 1 undermount, Node B grants 2 undermounts, and Node C grants 2 undermounts.[41]
  • This system is subject to change during testing.[41]

Little wyrmlings that you can grant to officers if you're a castle owner, and they can fly around too.[38]Steven Sharif

Wasser-Reittiere

Wasser-Reittiere sind Rang A Reittiere,[6] die man durch das Zähmen von Unterwasser-Kreaturen erhalten kann.[7]

Crowdfunding mounts

Kickstarter/Summer crowdfunding mount rewards are obtained and utilized by applicable backers in the following way:[2]

  1. Basic mounts are obtained through an early quest that is available to all players in starting areas.
  2. Players assign cosmetic skins to a character on their account from the account management page.
  3. The skin can then be applied to change the appearance of the mount that was earned in game.
    • This does not remove the skin itself. It can be applied again to any other applicable mount in the future.
    • Players may remove the skin from a character and assign it to another character on their account.
    • Skins can only ever be active on one character and one mount.

The Dawnbreaker mount skin is used in a similar fashion as described, but is only applicable to a certain class of mounts. Aquatic mount skins, like the Tidesnapper, are also used in a similar fashion, but are only applicable to the aquatic class of mounts.[2]

Mount barding

Mount barding cosmetic reward for backing at the Leader of Men level.[43]

Mount barding (also referred to as Saddles) is armor for mounts in Ashes of Creation. Mount barding is similar in concept to player armor.[44]

  • The higher the level of barding, the better looking it will be.[44]
  • Barding will have multiple components that can be equipped. Each component will increase the stats of the mount, such as hit points and speed.[45][44]
  • Barding cosmetics can only be applied to mounts with barding cosmetic slots.[46]
  • Cosmetic skins may only be applied to barding/saddle items that are earned in-game.[47]
    • Barding skins' appearance may differ depending on the type of mount.[46]

Rassenspezifische Reittiere

Characters are able to obtain racial mounts via a quest in that race's starting area.[48][3]

Each starting area will have a different quest line that will yield a different type of starting mount. But by default you don't just choose you know human and here you get a horse, so to speak. Because you can be a human in our game and choose to start in a different racial area- at a different Divine Gateway- and as such then you could follow the quest line that gives you the Orc mount.[48]Steven Sharif

Group mounts

Multi-passenger group mounts were unlocked during the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.[49][50]

  • These mounts will be elephant sized or larger.[51]

The group mount is gonna be a very difficult mount to achieve, but once achieved it's gonna be very fun and and pivotal in gameplay. So the idea there is to have them grand.[51]Steven Sharif

Mount drops

Mounts and pets are dropped by world bosses on a very rare basis.[52]

Temporäre Reittiere

Temporäre Reittiere that drop from bosses will age and eventually die.[53]

Naming mounts

Mounts and pets are able to be named by players.[54]

  • Summoners may be able to name their summons, but will not be able to change their creature type, which is part of the nameplate above the summon.[55]

Animal husbandry

Rare Flailrunner[56] mount that can only be obtained via breeding two tamable creatures through the animal husbandry profession.[1]

Animal husbandry is meant to be a pretty diverse profession: One that has a significant importance because players in MMOs love their mounts and we wanted to do something unique in that regard.[57]Steven Sharif

Animal husbandry is a profession within the processing artisan class.[58]

Many animals that can be tamed and bred through the animal husbandry profession can be found in herds across the lands of Verra. These herds represent a gatherable resource, of sorts, that masters of the animal husbandry profession may then use to discover lesser-known species variants with untold powers and abilities. Mounts play a large role in Ashes of Creation, and animals like the horse are an early gateway into the unlimited possibilities that await those skilled in the arts of husbandry.[59]

Breeding mechanics

These are some concept iterations of exactly how the animal husbandry profession's going to work as you create the offspring of different combinations of animals and you find and discover types of mounts. For example this Gryphon: You will have the ability to open up an in-game character customization screen for the animals; and you'll be able to use certain dials to touch different aesthetic aspects of the actual animal's features: On its wings, on its head, its beak, its armor that's going to be present; the claws and talons. You will be able to actually make a unique representation of this mount, so you're just not a cookie cutter like everybody else.[62]Steven Sharif

Animal husbandry will have discoverable blends of breeding.[63]

Animal husbandry and taming create unique mounts with unique abilities and stats.[12][66]

There is a compendium of acceptable parameters for breeding, which isn't going to be known until players discover it.[65][67] This discovery may be different for different players.[67]

  • Animals have a unique ID that is tied to the husbandry chart (compendium) that takes into account possible combinations between animals.[65] There will be odd combinations, but there will be limits to what is possible.[67]
  • Discovery of certain breeding habits and different quests may grant access to slots in the compendium.[67]
  • Players will be able to discover all possible combinations of genetic traits for breeding eventually, but there is an element of RNG associated with genetic parings.[68]

Animal husbandry involves a tree of its own that players get to discover via what pairings they choose... That's going to be a pretty fun aspect of creating rare mounts that haven't been seen in the world.[69]Steven Sharif

Genetic lines are based on the type of mount or creature that has been captured or tamed.[60]

  • The genetic system will involve trial and error to determine what yields or combinations are possible. This will incorporate an element of RNG.[65][67]
    • This may grant access to specific types of mounts.[67]
    • A dominant genetic trait might be discovered with a pairing or there may be a much smaller chance to unlock a specific breed of species.[65]
    • These chances are improved based on the player's advancement within the Animal husbandry profession.[65]

Each of these animals have a unique ID. There's going to be essentially this husbandry chart that takes into account potential combinations between animals that you have. So there's gonna be a little bit of obviously trial and error as players begin to explore this genetic system to determine what yields are possible; and those yields are obviously going to have an element of RNG to them as well. So you know you may pick up on a more dominant genetic trait within the pairing, or you may have a much smaller chance to unlock a specific breed of species; and then those chances obviously get augmented by your advancement within the Animal Husbandry profession. So a person who's more experienced in pairing of certain animals, and even the specific types of pairings, will increase their likelihood- their RNG chances of essentially birthing a unique mount; and being able then to sell those on an open auction. They can also be applied as certificates toward the construction of particular caravans as well.[65]Steven Sharif

There are stages of development within breeding.[70]

  • Youngling stage: For mammals this relates to baby animals. For lizards (reptiles) this is an egg stage.[70]

A modified character creation system allows customization of Beschwörer pets and Animal husbandry.[62][70]

  • Changes at the Youngling stage affect the appearance of the animal at adulthood.[70]
  • During the Youngling stage there may also be quests for specific types of cosmetic features.[70]

There's definitely going to be odd combinations, whether it's a butterflyger, giraffealope I don't know, but there will be definitely caps that are present.[67]Steven Sharif

Stables

Alpha-1 early example of the first tier of animal husbandry stables on a freehold plot.[71]

Players will be able to place the animals they are trying to focus on from a Husbandry perspective within the stable area and then over the course of time are going to be able to yield some type of results out of those parings.[71]Steven Sharif

Royal stables

Royal stables are a type of building in Ashes of Creation.[10]

The royal mounts will be the only class of mounts that can fully fly in the world; and they are will be needed to be mounted while in a royal stables. Royal stables are a building that can be built in a node if elected to be built by the mayor and supported by the community building it up through the quests to do so; and castles come with a royal stable as well. So once you have a royal stable and you become that Mayor or King or Queen, you may then mount the creature there and then take it wherever you wish.[10]Steven Sharif

Faster travel

Faster travel in Ashes of Creation refers to.[73]

Even though there's not fast travel, there is faster travel. So you know mount ridden. There will be connection points between certain nodes via the use of like flying automated creatures that you can use. Stuff like that.[73]Steven Sharif

Skins

Providing these limited options that collectors out there like when it comes to achieving and/or purchasing cosmetics. It means something I think when players make that decision to purchase or they go through the rigorous portion of achieving those things in game that it is not just everywhere around them and becomes meaningless at that point.[79]Steven Sharif

Haustiere, Mounts, Costumes, Armor, Gebäude and Accessories sold in the cosmetic store are skins.[80]

The best skins will be in-game achievable (obviously “best” is subjective, so I’d say the most ornate and detailed/unique).[86]Steven Sharif

Kosmetikshop

Ashes of Creation cosmetic store.[87]

There is going to be legendary cosmetics that can be earned and achieved in the game through the game systems, but that's going to take a significant amount of effort and work; and those cosmetics are going to be on-par with the cosmetics offered in the marketplace... What that does is it provides additional revenue to the company so that we can continue to fund the development of content as well and bridge the divide that not having a box cost would have and not having any pay-to-win mechanics whatsoever.[88]Steven Sharif

The Kosmetikshop enables players to purchase Cosmetics for use in Ashes of Creation.[89] The cosmetic store offers limited time, limited quantity items to help sustain game development.[90]

  • Equitable cosmetics, both from a quantity and quality standpoint, are achievable through in-game means.[90]
  • Nothing in the cosmetic store will be pay to win.[91]

Nothing in our shop will ever be pay to win as we believe this practice greatly hurts the MMORPG genre.[91]

  • Cash shop cosmetics will offer a diverse selection of unique looks.[92]

I want to incentivize purchase in the cosmetic shop for sustainability of what expansions we have intended, since we are not a box cost. I want to incentivize purchase by offering limited items: limited time, limited quantity, so you have confidence that when you purchase them, they won't be offered later on in some other way.[90]Steven Sharif

  • All cosmetic store items will be non-tradeable.[93] There will be no gifting mechanism for cosmetic items.[94]

I don't want cosmetic items that can be purchased from the market to be transferable... because it is in a way a transfer of money for potentially something in-game.[94]Steven Sharif
